The Ohlone people are recognized historically as the original inhabitats of this land-- as subjects of the mission and as a quaint, but extinct, culture. This is far from the truth. The Ohlone people are still here and their culture is very much alive. Developments like the one at Branciforte Creek destroy the places that hold the living memory of the Ohlone. Elders have referred to this destruction as cultural genocide.
